For those of you that dont know, Strikeforce is an mma promotion and currently the only US mma promotion that rivals UFC. If you can call it that. On Saturday, Strikeforce had an event that was broadcast on CBS.
See the results here.
This is CBS' 3rd MMA event in the last few years. The first was with the failed EliteXC promotion which heavily pushed the fact that it had Kimbo Slice on the main event. That didn't work out too well after the touted Slice got knocked out by a last minute replacement fighter.
Now the thing that everyone is focusing on from Saturdays event in Nashville is the post fight melee with Jake Shields crew and Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
As Shields was giving his victory interview, Mayhem made his way into the cage at the same time. The next thing you see is Mayhem bouncing in and out of the shot with Shields, before laughing and saying "Wheres my rematch buddy?". At that point Shields pushes Mayhem and that's when Shields entire crew of cornerman decide to gang up on Mayhem.
Watch here for yourself.
Now all the conservative ass-clowns out there are criticizing Mayhem for acting like a kid and disrespecting the sport. That's a bunch of crap, sure I can understand it may not have been the best time to ask for a rematch. However, I think it was a great time to ask.
Think about it, Mayhem could've went to Scott Coker to ask for a rematch, or even asked via an interview. But how long would it have took for an answer, 1 month? 6 months? Or do you think Shields or Coker might have even chosen to just ignore the request? What better way to get a direct and immediate answer then immediatly after the title fight on live national television. Sure it may not have been the most politically correct way of going about things but it guaranteed some sore of reaction.
Screw the people who said Mayhem ruined the sports reputation, I loved it. It was just a guy doing everything he could to get what he wanted. Shields crew has more explaining to do then Mayhem. Sure Mayhem stole your guys spotlight, but is that any reason all of you need to push and jump on top of ONE guy? I mean if you look at it, Mayhem is smiling when he asks where his rematch is at. Shields does look confused that he is really asking and standing there but he doesn't look threatened.
By the way, I think an immediate rematch would have been a great idea, but thanks to Dan Henderson signing with Strikeforce it was never given a thought. In the first fight for the vacated title in November between Mayhem and Shields, Mayhem was about 5 seconds from choking out Shields. Mayhem had it won and Shields did just enough wrestling and take downs to win a decision. Die-hard MMA fans love Shields technique however to others its boring. I don't mind the grappling, as long as its not just one guy laying on top of the other just trying to grind out a decision. I like fast paced action, hard-hitting blows, and insane reversals and submissions. Or as Joe Rogan calls it "meathead" fights.
One more thing. Did anyone see the interview with Nate Diaz after it all on sherdog.com? (I think it was sherdog.com but I couldn't find it). During the entire interview he looks like he's in trouble and is about to shit his pants any second. He says Mayhem just popped out from behind the banner, when he actually walks over and stands next to Shields a few seconds before Shields acknowledges him, even with a little friendly stomach pat. Its only after Mayhem asks a rematch, does one of the Diaz brothers jump in there and push Mayhem.
Bottom line is Mayhem wanted something, and he chose the most immediate and direct way of asking for it. The thing CBS and Strikeforce need to remember is any publicity is good publicity. It got everyone talking, and frankly if they were smart they would arrange and rematch ASAP. A good rivalry is just what Strikeforce needs.
